How to become a Referee

Let us know you're interested!!!

If you are interested in becoming a soccer referee please send an e-mail to inquiries@halton-branch.net with your name, mailing address, phone number, and your age as of January 1. Your name will be forwarded to the next referee course organizer in your area.

What is required to become a referee?

To become a referee one must first be physically and mentally fit. Of course, one must also have the spare time to do the games. If you meet these minimum requirements then you are ready to take the entry level (Class 4) course. This course involves 12 hours of practical demonstrations and classroom training.

When is the course run?

The course is usually offered in early spring, spread over a weekend or a number of weekends. Times and dates for these courses will be posted on this website when they are announced. There is no test or exam, but you will be evaluated in overall participation and involvement in the classroom and practical demonstrations.

Is there an age requirement to take the course?

To be eligible to take the course, you must be at least 12 years old on January 1 in the year you wish to take the course. There is no maximum age limit.

What games will I be able to referee after taking this course?

Class 4 referees are only licenced to referee house league (non-competitive) soccer. If you are 16 years or older on January 1 and have one year (one summer) of refereeing experience you are qualified to upgrade to Class 3. To pass the Class 3 exam you must obtain a mark of at least 75%. Class 3 referees are qualified to referee youth competitive and senior amateur soccer.

Who can I turn to for advice once the season starts?

Halton Branch members are available to offer help and guidance to all new and junior referees upon request.
